Virginia Catherine Smelser, 84, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Heisinger Bluffs.
Born March 17, 1921, in Clarkton, Mo., daughter of the late Walter Bethel and Florence Gertrude Dunn Ashbaugh, she was a piano teacher, a 1938 graduate of Clarkton High School, a graduate of Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo., and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Association of Retired Missouri State Employees, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW, Music Teachers National Association and United Methodist Women.
On Jan. 16, 1944, in Clarkton, she married Paul Spurgeon Smelser, who preceded her in death on July 11, 1997. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Bernard Ashbaugh.
Survivors include one son, David Smelser and wife, Ruth, of Springfield, Mo.; one daughter, Pamela Zubritzky, of Jefferson City; one granddaughter, Ericka Langlotz, of Prairie Home, Mo.; three nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 18, at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Larry L. Gallamore and the Revs. Chris Dumas and Mark Dumas officiating.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Heisinger Bluffs.
Buescher Memorial Home of Jefferson City was in charge of arrangements.
