Gov. John M. Dalton Memorial Highway bill sent to Senate

Sunday, April 3, 2005
A bill which would name a section of U.S. 412 in Dunklin and Pemiscot counties in honor of former Governor John M. Dalton has been approved by the Missouri House of Representatives and sent to the Senate, according to state Rep. Terry Swinger.

HB53 was filed in December by Swinger, D-Caruthersville, and co-sponsored by state Rep. Otto Bean Jr., R-Holcomb.

The bill provides that a portion of U.S. 412 from the east city limits of Kennett to the west city limits of Hayti be designated the Governor John M. Dalton Memorial Highway.

"We are proud of his [Dalton's] accomplishment during the many years he served the state of Missouri and feel it is only fitting to have a highway named in his honor," Swinger said.

Dalton, of Kennett, served as Missouri's 45th governor from 1961 until 1965. Prior to that he served as Missouri Attorney General from 1953 until 1961.
