When pastor Gary Mayes and his wife, Suzanne said good-bye to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the congregation knew it wouldn't be an easy task to replace the two who had served this church for 27 years.

The church was grateful when pastor David Everton and his wife, Florilda, took the call to lead the congregation of First Christian Church.

The couple moved to Kennett from Glennville, Ga. on January 30.

"It's a very warm and friendly community," Everton said about Kennett.

Everton has preached at various churches in the country including Ohio, Texas and Tennessee.

His wife Florilda is originally from Brazil and has a very charming accent.

"I met Florilda in Brazil when I served in the Peace Corps," Everton said.

Although Florilda's family is still in Brazil, the couple makes time to visit them.

Florilda, who speaks Portuguese and Spanish, has a degree in bilingual education and previously helped teach English to students in Georgia.

"If I can be helpful with something here, then I will," said Florilda about teaching in the area.

The Evertons have two daughters, Ana Claudia, who is a dentist with the military in Germany, and Maria Andra, who is a school teacher in Texas.

Their daughter Maria Andra has given the couple three grandchildren, Harrison, 6, Liam, 4 and Reis, 2.

"We really like the church and the people," Everton said. "We hope to bring ministry and continue the good work that Gary and Suzanne did."

Some of the good work the Mayes' did was help First Christian to construct a new fellowship building off the existing church.

"The building offers wonderful ministry for the youth and community of Kennett," Everton said.

The couple enjoys traveling and gardening. Everton especially enjoys collecting fossils, photography and astronomy.
