The couple will be retiring and moving to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to be near their children and grandchildren.
"We've observed how grandparents in the community spend time with their grandchildren and it has made us aware that this is what we want," said Rev. Mayes. "Our children our wanting us to be with them."
Rev. Mayes and his wife have two children, Michele and Melanie. Michele is married to Robb Rogers and has two sons, Trent, 9, and Drake, 2.
"Most people know when they need to retire," said Suzanne. "We're retiring for something, to be with our children and grandchildren."
Although the Mayes have been preaching and serving at the church for 27 years, they know that the church will be left in good hands.
"The lay leadership in the church is fantastic," said Mayes.
The church is also in the process of adding on a new building, something Mayes has been very excited about.
"The new building says a lot about our congregation," said Mayes. "They're looking forward, not looking back."
The couple is excited about their move but knows it will be hard to leave their friends behind.
"It has been a wonderful 27 years and the church members have not only been our members but our friends," said Mayes. "It's been a very loving and wonderful time."
Suzanne agrees with her husband and said that the friends they've made have become their chosen family.
"It's been a very enriching time here and it will be difficult to leave," said Suzanne.
As for memories the Mayes' hope to leave behind with the congregation, it's to let the congregation know that they "loved them."
"It's not that I hope they'll remember a sermon or a professional aspect, I want them to remember I care about them," said Mayes.
Rev. Mayes also said he is grateful to the church for the freedom to let him be who he is.
"This church has allowed me to be Gary Mayes, the person, and accepts me as their pastor," said Mayes. "I will miss the open hearts, the friendliness and acceptance of the people of the congregation and community."
There will be a reception for the couple on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 from 2-4 p.m. at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall. An open house and dedication of the new facility will be held at 3 p.m. during the reception.
