Voters turned out in large numbers Tuesday in Dunklin County where only one county-wide office was at stake.

Democrat Wanda Stampley warded off a challenge by Shawnee McGruder Trowbridge, and Independent candidate, eking out a six-point victory to retain her office of public administrator.

Stampley received 5,383 votes, nearly 46 percent, while Trowbridge received 4,711 or 40 percent of the votes cast.

Other county officials, all Democrats were re-elected without opposition in what amounted to a "popularity contest."

Jeanie Moore Herbst, of Malden, received 3,547 votes for County Commissioner, District 1; Patrick McHaney, of Kennett, received 5,224 votes in his re-election bid for County Commission, District 2.

Sheriff Bob Holder was the top voter getter with 9,426 votes.

Brenda Dicus received 8,730 votes for county assessor.

Nina Breedon Rhew was re-elected county treasurer, ex-officio collector with 8,675 votes.

County Coroner Jack Adkins was re-elected with 8,856 votes.

County voters went along with the rest of the state in approving Constitutional Amendment 3 which would direct all vehicle sales taxes and some gas taxes to the highway department.

The amendment recieved 8,189 votes or nearly 70 percent approval from voters. Only 1,958 voters, nearly 17 percent were opposed.
