Hardy Privett, 88, of Caruthersville, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Oakwood Community Living Center in Caruthersville.

Born Jan. 30, 1916, at Maury City, Tenn., he was a son of the late Robert and Lonnie Petty Privett. He attended school in Crockett Mill, Tenn. and Tyler, Mo. Inducted into the U.S. Navy Aug. 11, 1945, at St. Louis he was honorably discharged April 1, 1946 in New Orleans, La.

He served as fire chief at Caruthersville from 1976 to 1986, was a long-time member of the city council and recipient of the Senior Citizen of the Year award in 1992. He was a member of the Lions Club, receiving the Melvin Jones Award for dedicated humanitarian services. He was a senior serviceman for Ark-Mo Power Co. prior to retirement and was a deacon of First Baptist Church of which he was a member.

On Jan. 22, 1938, in Caruthersville, he married Margaret Irene Medlin who preceded him in death July 14, 1993. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Malcolm, Harold Lloyd and Robbie and by two sisters, Mary James and Hazel Sebree.

Survivors include two daughters, Shelby Walker of Caruthersville and Margie James of Dyersburg, Tenn.; one son, Larry Privett of Pine Bluff, Ark.; one brother, Leon Privett of Kennett; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at H.S. Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Caruthersville with Dr. James Adams officiating.

Burial was in Maple Cemetery in Caruthersville.

Pallbearers were members of the Caruthersville Fire Department.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Lions Club of Caruthersville.
