Carmel Johnson

Carmel A. Johnson, 82, of Caruthersville, Mo., died Friday, July 30, 2004, at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Born July 27, 1922, in Caruthersville, he was a U.S. Army veteran and was awarded a Bronze Star and worked at Brown Shoe Company. He was a member of the Caruthersville Wesleyan Church, member of the American Legion Post No. 88 and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

In 1972, in Caruthersville, he married Helen Howard, who preceded him in death on Oct. 15, 1994. He was also preceded in death by one son, Marvin Ray Hooper; two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include five daughters, Wanda McFarland, of Steele, Mo., Linda Babbit, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Peggy Vance, of Elgin, Ill., Nora Seaton, West Memphis, Ark., and Rebecca Lee, of Pascola, Mo.; three sons, James Hooper, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Roy and Ricky Hooper, both of Steele; 32 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at the Caruthersville Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Kenny Lee officiating.

Burial was in the Pemiscot Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ricky Hooper, Sr., Jason and Richard Hooper, Johnathan Schrimsher, Christopher Middleton and Jordon Hooper.

H.S. Smith Funeral Home of Caruthersville was in charge of arrangements.
