Mary Maude Smith, 79, of Malden, Mo., died Friday, April 16, 2004, at Malden Nursing and Rehab.
Born April 16, 1925, in Covington, Tenn., daughter of the late Augusta and Rebecca Adam Lawrence, she was a member of the Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Malden and Order of Eastern Star Queen Annie Chapter in Malden. She was president of Zion Grove Mission and Mother's Board of Zion Grove.
In 1942, in Dyersburg, Tenn., she married Adell Mathis, Sr., who preceded her in death on August of 1985. On Dec. 17, 1959, in Malden, she married C.J. "Kitty" Smith, who preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1996. She was also preceded in death by one son, Adell Mathis, Jr.; one daughter, Jessie Mae Rice; two infant sons; five sisters, Martha Currin, Lula Shanks, Beulah Wright, Louise Wells and Pearline Warner and three brothers, Earnest, Charlie and Albert Lawrence.
Survivors include two sons, Fred Mathis, Sr. and wife, Jo Ann, of Kileen, Texas and Tommy L. Sharpe, of Memphis, Tenn.; three daughters, Betty Eaton, of Malden, Josephine Wright and husband, Ben, of Batesville, Miss. and Marlene Jackson, of Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Barbara Barnes, of Marion, Ind.; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Malden with the Rev. Quincy Keeble officiating.
Burial will follow at the Macedonia Cemetery in Malden.
