Vera Gladys Grimes, 93, of Caruthersville, Mo., died Sunday, March 21, 2004 at Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, Mo.
Born January 13, 1911, in Cerro Gordo, Tenn., daughter of the late John Harvey and Mary Ann Brumley Grimes, she was a school teacher who taught 45 years in Pemiscot County schools. She was a member of First Baptist Church where was a teacher of young people in Sunday school and B.Y.P.U. in the Caruthersville Mission which soon became Calvary Baptist Church on Truman Blvd. Later she became teacher of the Bethany Sunday School class where she taught for nearly 50 years. She was W.M.U. president for eight years.
Survivors include two sisters, S.A. Neff, of Pinehurst, N.C., and Norvin T. Jones, of Rose Hill, Kan.; two nephews, Paul Jones and Monte Grimes Jr. and nieces Sandra Guyer, Mary Lou Brown, Rebecca Thompson, Nancy Tunis, Gracia Burnham, Mary Perry, Barbara McCall, June Kent, Helen Sharp and Thea Marie Grimes.
She was preceded in death by two siblings, Tera Grimes Ahart and Monte Ross Grimes.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 24, at the First Baptist Church in Caruthersville with Dr. James Adams officiating.
Burial was in the Little Prairie Cemetery at Caruthersville.
Pallbearers were Buddy James, Buck Ferrell, Lonnie Cagle, John Sellars, Keith Jean and Olin Parks.
H.S. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
