Rachel Clayton Montgomery, 79, of Caruthersville, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, Mo.
Born Jan. 10, 1925, in Wardell, Mo., daughter of the late William Henry and Lorena Penrod Clayton, she was a cook at DAEOC and worked at Brown Shoe Company. She was a member of the Caruthersville Church of God.
On June 13, 1943, in Caruthersville, she married Sterling Quentin Montgomery, who preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1982. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Levina Sims and one brother, James L. Clayton.
Survivors include one son, Tommy Montgomery and wife, Beverly, of Caruthersville; three brothers, Ulis Clayton, of Wardell, Gene Clayton, of Jonesboro, Ark. and Dwight "Buddy" Clayton, of Caruthersville; three sisters, Norma Leach, of Dyersburg, Tenn., Leilah Medlin, of Wardell, Mo. and Emily June Laughlin, of Sturgis, Ky.; four grandchildren, Michelle Crain, of Asheville, N.C., Misty Burgess, of Hayti, Wayne "Bo" Montgomery, of Fletcher, N.C. and Rachel Clair Montgomery, of Caruthersville; two step-grandchildren, Thomas King and Rodney Starnes, II; four great-grandchildren, Melanie and Megan Bruce and Sarah Crain, all of Asheville and Caleb Burgess, of Hayti and four step-great-grandchildren, Dylan and Mary Burgess, Lane Thomas King and Tyler Crain.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the John W. German Funeral Home Chapel in Hayti with the Revs. Randy Duda and James L. Laughlin officiating.
Burial was in the Little Prairie Cemetery at Caruthersville.
Pallbearers were Dean and Seth Armour, Bill and Hank Clayton, Troy Leach and Rodger Sims.
