Berline Matthews, 81, of Malden, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Born Oct. 29, 1922, in Holcomb, Mo., son of the late Thomas Matthews and Sara Jane Matthews Higgs, he was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in WWII, a farmer, truck driver and a cotton ginner. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Malden.
He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Finis Higgs; one brother, Hughie Matthews and three sisters, Bessie Nolen, Margie Searcy and Ann Russom.
On Nov. 29, 1946, in Piggott, Ark., he married Wanda Corn, who survives.
Survivors also include one son, Scott Matthews and wife, Ann, of Malden; three daughters Pamela Long and husband, Phil, of Blytheville, Ark., Cheryle Daugherty, of Malden and Lynn Carrell and husband, Bill, of Sullivan, Mo.; two sisters, Martha Riggs, of Campbell, Mo. and Imogene Kinkel, of Paris, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Malden with the Rev. Ernie Nelson officiating.
Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery at Malden.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Scotty, J.B., Bobby, T.J., Andy and Shawn Matthews, Kyle Selby and Brain Carrell.
