George Thomas Burkeen, 59, of Marrero, La., died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at his residence.
Born Jan. 24, 1944, in Finger, Tenn., son of the late Gilbert and Fleetie McCormick Burkeen and the step-son of the late Opal Burkeen, he was U.S. Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam and receiving commendations, campaign medals, including the Vietnam Metorious Service Award. He was a shrimper and a member of the Believers Life Family Church in Marrero.
On Sept. 23, 1964, in Hanford, Calif., he married Gail Parada, who survives.
Survivors also include two sons, Gary Burkeen and wife, Cathy, of Covington, La. and Shane Burkeen, of Marrero; two daughters, Kathy Abreo and husband, Ricky, of Belle Chasse, La. and Terrie Rich and husband, Perry, of Tulare, Calif.; 12 brothers and sisters, Avis Burch, of Owensville, Mo., Roy and Truman Burkeen, both of Cordele, Okla., Pauline Cunningham, of Rockford, Ill., Irene Riley and Ed Burkeen, both of Memphis, Tenn., Mary Jo Underwood, of Hayti, Mo., Jewel Walker, of Caruthersville, Mo., Jerry Walker, of St. Louis, Mo., Bob Burkeen, of Broken Arrow, Tenn., Layce Hooper, of Waverly, Tenn. and Connie Mulliniks, of Kennett; two grandsons, Ricky Abreo, Jr. and Justin Burkeen; nine granddaughters, Brandi Abreo, Chastity Alvarez, April and Jennifer Kyle, Tiffanie Pierce and Tonya, Chrissy, Madison and Rylie Burkeen; one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mae Williams and Faye Rackley.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 24, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Hayti with the Rev. Troy Alley officiating.
Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Hayti.
