Born Feb. 17, 1933, in Owensboro, Ky., son of the late Henry Elvis and Lula Belle Brown Smith, he was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict.
On Nov. 12, 1953, he married Virginia Purcell, who survives of the home.
Survivors also include two sons, John H. Smith, II, of Zion, Ill. and Jeffrey K. Smith, of Southaven, Miss.; two daughters, Virginia Sturgeon, of Pocahontas, Ark. and Deborah Edwards and husband, Craig, of Ojai, Calif.; one brother, Henry Elvis Smith, Jr., of Owensboro; three sisters, Haxel Vetters and Eleanor Mattingly, both of Owensboro and Edith Havener, of Lewisport, Ky.; nine grandchildren, Adrienne Raspberrry and husband, Charles, Emily Smith, Amanda Poole and husband, Sean, Anna Kate Sturgeon, Claire Weinstock, Jake Weinstock, Alex Smith, Cory Smith and John smith and five great-grandchildren, Payton, Isabelle and Eliza Raspberry, Jazmin Williams and Rachel Poole.
He was preceded in death by one brother, William Madison Smith and three sisters, Helen Smith, Mary Alice Atwell and Jacqueline Luttrell.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Crawford officiating.
Burial will follow at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kennett.
Pallbearers are Rick Taylor, Howard Luttrell, Brian Luttrell, Jimmy Rasberry, Sean Poole and Cory Smith.
Honorary pallbearer is George Luttrell.
