Verna McKay Bishop, 91, of Sardis, Miss., formerly of Hayti, Mo., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003 at the Sardis Community Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 12, 1911, in Oak Ridge, Mo., daughter of the late Isaac and Clare Agnes Ash McKay, she was a teacher, homemaker and a member of Highland Heights Baptist Church in Memphis Tenn. She was a volunteer at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
On Aug. 23, 1934 in Osceola, Ark., she married James Vernon Bishop, who preceded her in death on March 29, 1981. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Anita Jo; a daughter, Lynda Kay Bishop Grigory and one brother, Isaac McKay, Jr.
Survivors include one daugther, Carole Bishop Davidson, of Sardis; three sisters, Lola McKay Gestring, of Mesquite, Texas, Irene M. McKay, of Orange, Calif. and Onisca McKay Gibbons, of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the John W. German Funeral Home Chapel in Hayti, Mo. with Dr. Mike Melton officiating.
Burial was in the Mitchell #8 Cemetery at Cooter, Mo.
Pallbearers were James Davidson, Joe Davidson, Jr., Ron Hollis, Jason Wills, John Brown and Dale Mallinekrodt.
