Herman Christain

Herman Raleigh Christain, 82, of Hornersville, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.

Born Nov. 8, 1919, in Hornersville, son of the late Raymond and Oma May Dale Christain, he was U.S. Army veteran, a farmer and a member of the First Baptist Church in Hornersville.

He married Ruby Pierce, who preceded him in death.

Survivors include one son, Larry Christain, of Kennett; three daughters, Kathy Cain, of Hughes, Ark., Sharon Deck, of Kennett and Brenda Winkle, of Hornersville; one brother, Lonnie Christain, of Hornersville; three sisters, Lessie Dale, of Alton, Mo. and Dean Young and Milva Keating, both of Hornersville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Bradshaw-Emerson Funeral Home in Hornersville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at the First Baptist Church in Hornersville with the Rev. Doug Clinton officiating.

Burial will follow at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kennett.

Tomezene DePew

Tomezene Robinson DePew, 88, of Malden, Mo., died of acute leukemia on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Visitation will be at McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001. Services at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001 at the funeral home with Brother David McElwayne officiating and burial at Memorial Gardens.

She was born Tomezene Edna Rhew on May 1, 1913, the daughter of Lela Pirtle Rhew and James Edward Rhew. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Vester "Buck" Robinson, and her foster son, Jackie Robinson, in 1965. She later married Donald DePew of Malden, who died in 1999. Her younger brother, Jimmy Rhew, died in 1996.

A bookkeeper and landholder, she owned the old Frisbee Cotton Company. She was an active member of the Church of Christ, first in Holcomb and then in Malden.

Survivors include a foster daughter, Lois James McCain, of Malden and her sons, Dennis James and Kelly James; two step-sons, Bill DePew, of Poplar Bluff, and Ronald DePew, of Springfield; a sister, Ettar Fadler of Louisiana and her children, Judy Fisher, Danny Fadler and Cathy Hodnett; a sister-in-law, Nina Rhew, of Holcomb and her children, Toni Huber and Judge Perry Rhew; and a foster sister, Ruby Venable, of Kennett.

Kenneth Raines

Kenneth L. Raines, 50, of Paragould, Ark., died today, Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro, Ark.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete with the McDaniel Funeral Home of Kennett.

Evelyn Shelby

Evelyn Shelby, 91, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., formerly of Bernie and Malden, Mo., died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at the Westwood Hills Care Center in Poplar Bluff.

Born Sept. 7, 1910, in Earle, Ky., daughter of the late William Jackson and Mary Elizabeth Stanley Arnett, she was a homemaker and a member of the White Oak Grove General Baptist Church in Bernie.

On March 28, 1932, in Vienna, Ill., she married Homer T. Shelby, who preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 1952. Survivors include four sons, Charles Chasteen Gilbert, of Inglis, Fla., Arnett Junior Shelby, of Salem, Mo., James Edward Shelby, of Waterford, Mich. and Herman Dale Shelby, of St. Louis, Mo.; four daughters, Betty Jean Stiles, of Salem, Carolyn Sue Porch, of Poplar Bluff, Marilyn Ruth Scofi, of Ellerslie, Ga. and Sharon Shelby McClure, of Overland Park, Kan.; 60 grandchildren; 35 plus great-grandchildren and 10 plus great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Carl Robert Gilbert; five brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Rainey Funeral Home Chapel in Bernie with the Rev. Vernon Cooper officiating.

Burial was in the Bernie Cemetery.

Pete Small

Pete Small, 83, of Senath, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Lake Jackson, Texas.

Visitation wil be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Senath.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kennett.
