Tiger Cages(01/30/04)
In the midst of our war with Iraq, I have once again been reminded about one of the aspects of war that I had forgotten. I knew that there were going to be bombs, destruction, even death, but when that vehicle carrying American army personnel made a wrong turn and drove right into the hands of the enemy, I was immediately reminded of "prisoners of war" -- an issue that I hadn't thought of since the Vietnam War. ...

Stepping out into 2004 (01/16/04)
I've had the following piece in my file for a long time, and I feel it's an appropriate thought as we step out into a brand new year. The following is one of Jesus' parables as recorded in Luke 12:15-21:...

(10/31/03)
Justification -- Part I Last week in my column, I shared some ideas about the Pharisee in Jesus' parable found in Luke 18:9-14. Today, I want to turn our attention to the tax collector in that same parable. The J. B. Phillips translation of this parable said the man "stood in a distant corner, scarcely daring to look up to heaven and with a gesture of despair prayed, 'God, have mercy on a sinner like me.'"...
