Kennett-Charleston girls: Live updates and more...

Posted Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at 9:11 PM

9:10 p.m.: It's over. Kennett loses 53-42 to Charleston, the second time tonight the higher seed went down. Charleston will play Scott City for the district title on Friday night.

Kennett ends its season with a record of 16-8 and looks to be a program on the rise in southeast Missouri.

9:01 p.m.: With 55.1 seconds to go, Charleston has pushed it back to 46-40. A 3 from Jerquawnda Sherrell looms huge right now. Kennett has to hit some 3s and get some stops to pull this one out.

8:57 p.m.: Surprise! With 1:47 left in the game, Kennett has cut the lead to two (41-39). Hope Sparks has hit a pair of 3s in the final period and Wheeler has added another.

8:42 p.m.: With 1:15 left in the third period, Charleston has extended its lead to 30-20. The Lady Tribe hasn't hit a basket in over nine minutes and things aren't looking very good for a potential comeback.

8:23 p.m.: After rallying to make it a three-point deficit on Allyson Luce's bucket with 2:15 left in the second period, Charleston scores the final four points of the half to lead 25-18 at the break. Luce and Brittney Williams each have six points to lead the Lady Tribe, but Jerica Wheeler and Hope Sparks have two fouls each.

As stated earlier, Charleston's zone has been very effective at forcing turnovers and Kennett has yet to hit a 3-pointer tonight. Charleston has hit three treys and they have been huge.

8:11 p.m.: Kennett finds itself down 19-14 with 3:19 to go until halftime. Charleston's zone has forced several turnovers and the Lady Tribe seems to be having trouble getting in a groove.

7:30 p.m.: Scott City has pulled off the upset of top-seeded and state-ranked Kelly, 52-37. Stephanie Essner scored 22 points to lead Scott City. Debra Hall had 23 points for Kelly despite battling an injury.

With Kelly out of the way, the battle for the Class 3, District 1 title became much more interesting. Kennett and Charleston will tip off soon, with the winner battling Scott City for the championship on Friday night.

7:02 p.m.: Fifth-seeded Scott City may be in the process of upsetting No. 1 Kelly. With less than three minutes left in the third quarter, Scott City held a 31-22 lead after leading 20-16 at the half. Debra Hall is playing for Kelly, but may not be 100 percent after a recent injury.
