Career over for CaruthersPosted Wednesday, December 31, 2008, at 1:23 PM
I spoke with Kennett boys basketball coach Jim Vaughan Tuesday night, and he informed me that after another round of tests, Tribe sophomore Randrick Caruthers does indeed have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and will not be able to play basketball again.
HCM is the same condition that killed college basketball star Hank Gathers in 1990 and Boston Celtics forward Reggie Lewis in 1993. Caruthers collapsed on the court during the Indians' game against Malden Saturday at the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament and was taken to the hospital in Dexter before being transferred to St. Louis. Aren't there HIPPA laws that keep people from discussing personal medical information?
I know there are HIPPA laws!
HIPPA laws give a private citizen the option to withhold his or her personal medical information from the public. But in this circumstance, I can't imagine there's a huge objection from the parties involved.
