Week 5 NFL wrapup

Posted Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at 5:07 PM

It's better to win ugly than to lose pretty.

The Tennessee Titans committed five turnovers, gave up two kickoff returns of over 40 yards, had a fumble returned for a touchdown and allowed a 49-yard run on a fake punt, and still found a way to beat the Atlanta Falcons 20-13 Sunday.

"You only get to play like we did today on offense about once a season -- maybe once every two seasons," Titans' running back Chris Brown said after the game. "But our defense played lights out and that's what we needed them to do. We've got a great defense and we know that. We can depend on them. ... But we can't keep putting them in bad situations like we did today."

It just once again proves another cliche: good teams find a way to win. As bad as Tennessee looked at times Sunday, its defense came up big every time. The Falcons had a first-and-goal at the 1 with a chance to tie at the end of the game, but the Titans stopped them and ran out the clock.

For the St. Louis Rams, the opposite proved true: bad teams find a way to lose. The Rams got 102 yards rushing from Brian Leonard and three passing TDs from Gus Frerotte, but Frerotte also tossed three interceptions and St. Louis lost 34-31 to Arizona.

I'm still not convinced the Rams are the worst team in the league as some think. This team, even with its injuries, seems better than a 1-15 or 2-14 team. But perhaps the Rams are that bad. Let's hope not.

As for the Chiefs, you have to run to score, and you have to score to win. The Jaguars gave up 282 rushing yards to Tennessee in their season opener, but held Larry Johnson to just 12 yards on the ground Sunday. What gives? The next game -- against Cincinnati -- should be interesting -- the Bengals' high-scoring offense and weak defense against Kansas City's strong D and anemic offense.

As for other teams, how 'bout them Cowboys?! Like I said, good teams find ways to win, and Dallas did on Monday night against the Bills. Tony Romo had a miserable game, the Bills led by 11 points in the second half, and the 'Boys still pulled it out. Not bad. This weekend's game against the Patriots at Texas Stadium could be one for the ages, not to mention a Super Bowl preview...
