We are midway through the high school football season, and if it hasn't been asked already, it's time to ask," Who's going to win the Carr Trophy?"

Unlike past years, there doesn't seem to be one person who is so far ahead of the pack that is making that question academic.

Right now, the likely front-runner seems to be junior Adam Zweigart from Jackson. The running back has ran for 745 yards and seven touchdowns this season and is a big reason the Indians are 5-0 and ranked in the top 5 in Missouri's Class 5.

But he isn't the only one putting up nice numbers this season, so there are several contenders for the trophy. Among them are:

• Shaun Jones, Hayti. A converted receiver, Jones is a threat to run or pass for the Indians. He has ran for 304 yards this season -- only Perryville's Josh Perrault has ran for more among quarterbacks in southeast Missouri -- and has passed for 466 yards and four scores in 57 attempts as well. Hayti has the area's most dangerous attack, and Jones is perhaps the biggest reason why.

• Jerome Covington, Hayti. Covington has 46 carries for 410 yards and eight TDs, plus he has caught three scoring passes and is the leading scorer in the area. Covington and Jones might be the area's best 1-2 punch.

• Bobby Rawson, Dexter. Rawson is the best receiver in the area, with 23 catches for 339 yards and five touchdowns. He is also a standout on defense. Dexter may not be the team it has been the last few years, but Rawson is still having a big year.

• Blake Parr, Kennett. Parr, a junior, has done a little bit of everything this year as the Tribe is off to its best start in several years. He has thrown for 570 yards and been intercepted just twice in 73 attempts, but has also ran for nine touchdowns -- more ground TDs than anyone in the area and made a game-clinching interception in an emergency start on defense. Parr may be the best player many high school football fans have never heard of in southeast Missouri.

There may be others, but those are some of the standouts. What do you think?
