Week 4 football picks

Posted Friday, September 21, 2007, at 12:39 AM

After two 5-for-5 weeks on high school football picks, I missed my first game of the year last week when I picked Sikeston to beat Dexter. Ironically, I went 3-for-3 on my NFL picks. Despite missing the Sikeston-Dexter game, I'm 14-1 on the season picking preps and pleased about that. So without further ado, here's Buhler's picks for week 4.

Portageville at Malden: Both teams are 0-3, and the Green Wave have struggled all year offensively, scoring just one touchdown (Malden's other two scores have been on defense).
But it's homecoming for the Green Wave and the Bulldogs may be just what the doctor ordered for Malden.
Buhler's pick: Malden.

Hayti at Caruthersville: This big rivalry game was a dandy last year, with Hayti coming out with a 14-6 win that opened eyes around southeast Missouri.
This year, however, it looks like a mismatch, as Hayti is 3-0 and the Tigers are 0-3, including a 28-12 loss to a Kennett team Hayti had little trouble with.
Buhler's pick: Hayti.

Charleston at NMCC: This is an interesting barometer game, as Kennett edged Charleston 21-19 to open the season and NMCC is regarded as the team to beat in Kennett's district.
This looks like it could be a mismatch, but Charleston has some weapons and NMCC's two wins were against weak Cape Central and Festus-St. Pius. Still...
Buhler's pick: NMCC.

Dexter at Poplar Bluff: It's rivalry night at Poplar Bluff's Morrow Stadium where the Mules host the Bearcats. Last year, Dexter beat Poplar Bluff 10-7 in overtime to snap a 16-year losing streak to the Mules, but that was last year. Bluff has looked good in all three of its games this season, including a 32-12 whipping of NMCC last week.
Buhler's pick: Poplar Bluff.

And last but not least...

Kennett at East Prairie: East Prairie has been outscored 114-19 this season and has started three different quarterbacks, but its three losses have came to strong teams in Hayti, Corning (Ark.) and Scott City.
However, the Eagles have also had to also deal with the turmoil of a coaching change this week that likely hasn't helped matters.
On the other side, Kennett looks to be fired up despite injuries to two defensive starters after being thrashed at Hayti last week. East Prairie has struggled with the run this year and the Indians love to run it...
Buhler's pick: Kennett.

And for my NFL picks on the Rams, Chiefs and Titans, here goes...

Rams at Buccaneers: The Rams looked lousy again on offense, fumbling away a close loss to up-and-coming San Francisco. While the Rams have to break into the win column eventually, I'll believe it when it happens...
Buhler's pick: Buccaneers.

Vikings at Chiefs: The Chiefs finally come home after two miserable games on the road to start the season. At least they're playing Minnesota, who won't set the world on fire but has a tough defense and a Rookie of the Year candidate in Adrian Peterson.
I may regret it, but...
Buhler's pick: Chiefs.

Titans at Saints (Monday night): Picked to be a Super Bowl contender, the Saints have struggled mightily this season, being outscored 72-24 in big road losses to the Colts and Buccaneers. On the other hand, the Titans are just three points away from being 2-0 thanks to the league's best running attack (so much for missing Travis Henry) and one of the NFL's best run defenses.
The Saints will be at the Superdome for the first time all year and could be primed to take out two weeks of frustration on Tennessee, but...
Buhler's pick: Titans.
