NFL Week 2 wrapup

Posted Tuesday, September 18, 2007, at 9:19 PM

"In spite of an up-and-down preseason, Rams' fans seem to have a lot to be excited about. Steven Jackson has quietly became one of the NFL's elite backs and could post MVP-caliber numbers in '07..."
"Don't look now, but this might be the best [St. Louis Rams] team since the Super Bowl years."

Now I wonder what ignorant sportswriter made those statements? Oh wait, that was me...

After two weeks, the Rams have looked atrocious, period. True, the defense hasn't looked all that bad, but the offense -- especially Steven Jackson -- has looked almost incompetent. Jackson has ran for just 118 yards in two games with zero touchdowns, a pair of fumbles lost and a 3.0 yards per carry average, horrible numbers for a player considered to be an elite back by many. While I know the team has missed injured tackle Orlando Pace, St. Louis played without Pace last season and managed to even win a few games.

The Rams have also been outscored 30-6 in the second half, which leads one to wonder if coach Scott Linehan's philosophy resting his star players extensively in preseason games has left them underprepared once the real thing starts.

That said, it's not too late for the Rams. Simply getting Jackson to start producing and him and the rest of the team to hold on to the ball will make a huge difference. Even the Patriots started out 0-2 the season they won their first Super Bowl.

Kansas City Chiefs: I'm not sure the same can be said for the Chiefs. The offense has scored just one TD all season and Larry Johnson hasn't even rushed for 100 yards total this season. True, the Bears have perhaps the league's saltiest defense, but Damon Huard hasn't looked like he did last year and I had a feeling LJ wasn't going to be the LJ of last year. This team seems to be desperately missing Will Shields up front and I don't see it getting better, at least not this season.

Tennessee Titans: At least one "local" NFL team isn't doing too bad (Tennessee at least has won a game!) Still, the Titans have looked good. The running game is the best in the league and the defense has went from dead last in '06 to tied for 17th this year (and the run defense is seventh in the NFL). True, the passing game needs to get revved up a little more, but the Titans are awfully close to being 2-0 and looking more and more like the 10-11 win team I thought they'd be before the season.
