Titans looking at Rice; Rams lock up Bulger, Carriker

After a mostly quiet offseason (aside from Pacman Jones), the Tennessee Titans have gotten busy the last few days.
Wednesday, the Titans signed former Pro Bowl receiver Eric Moulds -- who will now most likely start alongside Brandon Jones -- and now it looks like Tennessee may take a shot at signing defensive lineman Simeon Rice.
According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, Titans' coach Jeff Fisher has expressed interest in Rice.
"There's a possibility we may bring him in and give him a physical,'' Fisher told The Tennessean. "We are discussing that.''
Before an injury cut short his season in 2006, Rice averaged 13.5 sacks per season from 2001-2005 and missed just two games his first 10 seasons in the league.
Rice would provide a huge boost to a Titans' defense that was among the NFL's worst in 2006. Rice is a winner (he helped the Arizona Cardinals earn their only playoff berth in the last 20 years in 1998) and if healthy, could help Tennessee's defense take a quantum leap in 2007.
Rice, a two-time Pro Bowler and a key part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Super Bowl team five seasons ago, was let go by the Bucs Thursday after reportedly failing a physical and hours after the team signed top draft pick Gaines Adams.
Meanwhile, the St. Louis Rams signed starting quarterback Marc Bulger to a six-year, $65 million contract extension Friday that includes $27 million in guaranteed money and makes him one of the league's highest-paid QBs.
Bulger is coming off of a career season in 2006 that saw him pass for over 4,000 yards while throwing 24 touchdowns and just eight interceptions.
Also, St. Louis signed first-round draft pick Adam Carriker to a five-year deal Friday, the last Rams' draft pick to sign a contract. Carriker, a standout at defensive end at Nebraska, has been compared to former Nebraska and Rams' defensive end Grant Wistrom. Wistrom, who was drafted in the first round in 1998, helped the Rams win Super Bowl XXXIV and reach Super Bowl XXXVI. |
