2010 Delta Fair Parade

Posted Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at 8:30 AM

Hard to believe that is it only 3 weeks until the Delta Fair! It just goes to show that despite whatever is going on in our lives, things keep rolling around us. A few guidelines for the parade:

The date of the fair is September 28 -- October 2, with the parade being on Tuesday, September 28. We start the parade promptly at 6 p.m. and we do not call it for rain even if it rains all day or Jack McDaniel and Bill Walsh will be after me with a big stick! We have been fortunate that the parade was rescheduled only once in the past 50+ years. Bill got very nervous one year when it was still raining at 5:50 but Jack refused to call off the parade. Sure enough, at 6:00 the rain stopped and the sun broke through and another parade got started on time. I hope to be that lucky.

Please call the Chamber if you plan to enter in the parade. Our phone number is 573-888-5828; our email is info@kennettmo.com; fax is 573-888-9802. We need the name of your entry and a contact phone number, please. Entries are limited to two vehicle lengths (truck & trailer, vehicle & people walking, 2 golf carts, etc.). The line up is prepared the weekend prior to the parade, so please contact us no later than 4 p.m. Friday, September 24th. Any entry after that time will be put at the end of the parade.

There is a method to the madness of the parade line up. We keep parade information for several years, so we do our best to see that those who were in front rotate toward the back and vice versa. Kennett bands are always going to be toward the back as a courtesy of serving as the host town for the parade. Horses now bring up the rear, although Jack and Bill remember a time that horses were put in the middle of the parade and someone got the job of following behind them and scooping horse poo into a cart. Any volunteers?

Candy can be given out during the parade, but boy does it create some issues. Safety is a key concern since so many people -- adults as well as children -- run out into the street to get candy. Please be careful and be aware of the many vehicles in the parade. Trash is the other problem. Please respect our town and the many property owners who allow us to watch the parade from their parking lots and sidewalks. The volume of trash along the parade route is truly shameful so please dispose of trash properly and encourage others to do the same.

You may contact the Chamber starting after lunch on Monday, September 27th to find out your entry number and line-up location. We recommend that groups meet somewhere other than the parade line-up and travel to the line-up together. Line up starts as early as 5:00 p.m., so newbies, be prepared to hurry up and wait. Porta potties are available on the west side of KHS lawn.

We're looking forward to another great fair and parade. See you out there!

Hi Jan.

Left Kennett area many decades ago, but the parade and fair are some of the few things I look back on fondly.

BTW Jan, keep up the good fight, know yours is a daunting task, for the entrenched old guard will not readily relinquish ground.

Jan, just left another remark on the article itself, but my Great Uncle Paul T. Miller and his wife Wanda used to ride up front in the horse rider section. Do you have any pics of him and that beautiful saddle??? And as far as working behind the horses pulling the poopy duty was one of my brothers, Billy W. Miller, Jr. We never let him forget it! The best job in the world! Good luck and have a safe happy parade this year! I really miss the parade and the fair! CJ Wright, Lakeland, FL
