From TEA to Trash

I have been so very concerned that our America, our great nation of strong, independent, free-thinking individualists is fast becoming weak, dependent and easily manipulated and then suddenly my spirit is restored over, of all things, taxation and trash.

Regardless of whether or not we agree with the underlying issues behind the TEA (Taxed Enough Already) rallies around the nation, we should respect the right to hold those rallies and admire the folks willing to express their views so publicly. On our local level, we've had a bit of a rally at a City Council meeting or two over consolidated trash services.

As with most things, there are many sides to this issue and no easy answer to the ongoing problem of consistent trash removal for all households within the City limits. And like the TEA parties, regardless of how we feel about the issue, we should respect the right to express those views and admire people for their willingness to attend City Council meetings.

So please, folks, keep coming and encourage others to join you even if their opinions differ from yours. We need people to be involved, to present differing views, to voice concern or support. We are rarely silent on any subject at the coffee shop or office or ball game, so put those opinions to effective use and speak out. We may just find some common ground and work out some issues in the process.

Hey (again) Jan...

Glad to see that you are blogging again.... I replied to your Barbie post and hope you see what I stated about extra rhizomes of irises that I will be having this summer and probably every year after 2009.

If the Chamber can use any for any of their 'pet' projects then keep me in mind for 2009 and following years as all mine (iris rhizomes) will be multiplying like heck from now on and for me to justify getting NEW ones (read that purchasing 'names' of ones that I do not have as yet) I have to divide and get rid of some each year else I will have nothing but irises covering my entire yard. They DO multiply like heck and I find that every two years I will add more and more (more than I need that year) and then scurry around trying to find room for the year's 'picks' that I cannot seem to resist. Irises are so easy to plant as you don't really even put the rhizomes completely the soil but think of them as a canoe, half in the water and half out but you leave the rhizome half way in the soil and half way out of the soil and they do best planted that way. I even have tossed discards into piles (meaning to dispose of them at the dumpster) and forgot and left them in a pile and the next year, there they are, growing like mad and blooming away come April and May.

So..., while you are "concerned about our America" I on the other hand am concerned that Americans don't recognize the 'easiest' beautiful flower that one can plant or 'halfway' plant..... ;-)

Good to see you blogging again, I miss your entries when other city concerns keep you away from the DDD. kennett (and all small towns) need people like you that are concerned and stay concerned about America.

Well, speaking of gardens I have to get back to plotting THIS year's new iris pick locations...

P.S. - Maybe the garden club would like some of my extra rhizomes....

Hi, Ruth!

Thanks so much for the kind offer of irises - I used to have several large flower beds at home but with this job I seem to do well to keep a few daylilies and coneflowers watered.

I would love to have some irises here at the Chamber, but our office is in full sun almost all day and we have no sprinkler system. Anything here has to be extremely hardy.

My grandmother planted some beautiful purple irises many years and they continue to multiply and bloom which always makes me feel that she's still watching over us.

Thanks again and please keep in touch.
