Community Connections -- Get out and vote!Posted Friday, July 25, 2008, at 7:26 AM
As Americans, we have become accustomed to so many individual freedoms, rights and privileges that we often take many of them for granted. One such right is the right to vote.
Tuesday, August 5th is a primary election. If you have never registered to vote, register now. Check out the FAQs at www.sos.mo.gov. If you don't get registered in time to vote on August 5th, you'll still have a golden opportunity to vote in the general election on Tuesday, November 4th.
Any person who does not vote should lose the privilege to complain about anything that any governmental body does or does not do. I know that there can be circumstances which make it difficult for some people to vote. But the apathy, the general "oh, so what" attitude that many people take should concern us all.
The County Clerk's office was kind enough to provide me with a report which details the total number of registered voters in Kennett, with this total broken down by ward. Another report shows how many of those registered voters actually voted last April. There are 7,210 registered voters in the City of Kennett. 1,261 of those are inactive, so let's use the total of 5,949 active, registered voters. "Active" means that person has voted at some point in time.
In the April, 2008 election by ward, and only active registered voters:
Many factors impact voting - the issues, the candidates, even the weather - but the basic issue is that only a small percentage of registered voters actually vote. The interesting thing about this particular election is that Proposition Project K.I.D.S. (the school bond issue) was on the ballot and the supporters of this issue worked very hard to get people to the polls. 1,116 people voted for the bond issue while 379 people voted against it, which means 65 people who voted on other things that day did not vote one way or the other on this issue. Even with the mighty effort of Project K.I.D.S. supporters only 26% of active, registered voters voted at all.
We are again in an important election year. No matter what your political affiliation or personal preference, please show your support of a system earned with blood, sweat and tears. Get out and VOTE!!

I was a driver for the Obama campaign. Drivers were not allowed to ask questions of who passengers were voting for ,or persuade voters in any way.We picked up anybody who called our phone lines, delivered them to the polls & took them back home.Everything went well! Some voters were in their 50's who had either not voted ever, or voted for the 1st time in many years! They all beleived this election was the most important election EVER!
Im saying this for the umteenth time. If you dont like whos on the ballots, and think you dont have good choices. Think again, you can write your candidates name on the ballot and it will count just as much as if her/his name was printed there. Good day and dont forget to get out the votes...Pick up your neighbors and ride together to the poles..Ask if anyone in your church needs a ride to the poles. Be a resposible American. Dont forget to vote.
WOW, you hit the nail right on the head.
"somebody raises and spends millions of dollars on campaigning I think of all the good that money could do. It is a very frustrating system."
And again, Well said. If you took the money from both campaigns this year, how many hungry children do you think you could feed or house? or how many elderly folks could you give medical help to. The list goes on and on, and it makes me sick.
I don't know what to tell you, bones. I am a registered Democrat, but I have voted and will vote for both Democrats and Republicans.
I know it goes against the principles of the Democratic and Republican parties to vote for the person and not for the party, but I cannot in good conscience vote straight party lines at times.
On a local level, the candidates should have a proven track record of community involvement and fiscal responsibility; they should have good communication and management skills and a working knowledge of how a governmental process works.
We are not so large a community that these basics would be difficult to achieve.
On a national level, I just feel very manipulated by the media and I am so sick of all of the campaign tactics by the time election day gets here I have to make myself go vote.
I know this is naive, but I every time somebody raises and spends millions of dollars on campaigning I think of all the good that money could do. It is a very frustrating system.
Well said Jan. What would you say to a person that replied with, I'm just not sure who the right person to vote for is? So how do I make my choice when I vote?
As for me, I'm not afraid to say I'm more Democratic than anything. I don't feel I should vote for the democrat just because I'm a democrat. I want to vote for the person that will contribute the most that they have to offer for our country as a whole. But who that may be is a really good question. They both wear flip flops!
Maybe I should run for president, I have a pair of flip flops too! What do you think Jan, Would I get your vote..HEHE
There would be free CD's in it for ya..HAHAHAHA
