Missouri State Fair
Posted Wednesday, August 19, at 7:18 AM
For the sake of my sanity and my blood pressure, I'm taking a detour from political issues and reporting from the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia. This is my third year to serve on the State Fair Commission and I have almost figured out where everything is on the 440 acre grounds.

My first year was 2007, the year that the temperature stayed around 110 degrees for the entire 12 days. The asphalt temps ranged from 132 -- 150 degrees and heat strokes occurred almost daily. During the Fair, the Commissioners follow a pretty tight schedule, attending various events, visiting vendors and concessionaires, thanking sponsors, meeting state and federal legislators and officials. I was extremely embarrassed to stand next to someone as sweat trickled over my various parts, but I soon realized that everybody else was in the same condition. Not having been around livestock very much, my first venture to the swine barn was particularly interesting in such hot weather. I attended my first rooster crowing contest, won a blue ribbon in a "celebrity" mystery cook-off (my husband laughed at that!), saw more breeds of cattle, horses, sheep, rabbits and pigs that I knew existed. And I met Alice Cooper -- now that tells my age! As I was rockin' out to "I'm 18" clapping with my arms held high I actually felt 18 again until I noticed that my upper arm old lady flab was keeping the beat. Oh well.

So this year, although I am still not a pro, I am able to actually help people find things and navigate the grounds fairly well. It has been a great year so far. Governor Nixon attended the opening ceremonies last Thursday, made the rounds including a tour of the MoAg building, and at each stop he emphasized the importance of Missouri agriculture to our state and to the world. I did have an absolutely fabulous time at the Heart concert last Friday night, amazed that Ann and Nancy can still belt out those famous songs. I am doing my best to sample every taste of Missouri, from honey ice cream to buffalo meat. I visit the Missouri Electric Cooperatives building regularly, each time thanking those who sent crews into our area last winter. I go by the beautiful MoDOT gardens and building, trying to catch the District 10 crew so that at least somebody can understand my Bootheel accent.

As are all of our fairs and festivals across Missouri, the Missouri State Fair showcases the best of our communities, particularly our youth. Since I am constantly meeting people and being introduced at many events, a whole lot more people know about Kennett than they did a few years ago. Almost every person I meet asks me if I am from Mississippi, which is an excellent lead into educating another Missourian that there is a Missouri south of Cape Girardeau and that we grow cotton and rice, among many other things. Wednesday and Thursday are legislative days, giving us the opportunity to visit with our state and federal elected officials but I am avoiding political issues in this blog, so that report will have to wait. I will say that we should all be very proud that our State Representative Tom Todd and his wife Pat are going to spend a few days at the Fair this year. O.K., I'm off to the pig races -- be back in the office next week!

Stupid Is As Stupid Does
Posted Monday, August 3, at 2:34 PM

I consider myself an average American, part of the working middle-class. The last few years I have paid a bit more attention during presidential campaigns, but by the time I go to vote, the barrage of campaign propaganda pushes me to the point that I feel I am voting not for the most qualified person but for the one I think will do the least damage. I rarely do in-depth research myself on those running for office, or on their legislative agenda once they are elected. Until now...

From TEA to Trash
Posted Friday, May 8, at 11:08 AM

I have been so very concerned that our America, our great nation of strong, independent, free-thinking individualists is fast becoming weak, dependent and easily manipulated and then suddenly my spirit is restored over, of all things, taxation and trash...

Happy Birthday, Barbie
Posted Wednesday, March 11, at 11:15 AM

It's hard to believe that Barbie is 50 this year, even tougher to admit that I am old enough to remember that my first Barbie did not have bendable legs. I did get the newer version and I remember thinking how awesome it was to be able for Barbie to sit down and put her feet on the floor. ...

The Penalty of Self-Sufficiency
Posted Monday, February 23, at 1:28 PM

I need help, please! Someone needs to explain to me the exasperating system of disaster assistance so that my blood pressure does not hit the roof every time I see a symbol of the various agencies involved in the process. FEMA asked us to help organize a meeting with the area churches and service agencies so that a long-term recovery committee of local folks could be formed. ...

Let There Be Light
Posted Friday, February 13, at 2:02 PM

Yippeee!! Our office electricity came on Monday, and at home last night. Much of the power within the city limits has been restored and many lights are going on throughout the county. We will, at least for a time, appreciate the things that we have done without since January 27th...

Addicted to power
Posted Saturday, February 7, at 7:36 AM

I tried to think of a kinder, gentler term than "addicted," but I just have to admit it - I am absolutely, completely, mentally and physically addicted to power. Electric power, that is. I didn't realize how strong this addiction was until the ice started coming down on Monday night. ...

Community Connections--Opportunity Knocks, Part 1
Posted Wednesday, August 6, at 7:24 AM

Opportunity is all around us, but we often fail to take advantage of it. I've had the opportunity to work with Frank Spano, a site consultant, for the last few days and to see Kennett as he would see us as a location for a new manufacturing or distribution facility. We'll go into more detail about how we can take advantage of Mr. Spano's visit, but before we can move forward we have got to let go of some of the past...

Community Connections -- Get out and vote!
Posted Friday, July 25, at 7:26 AM

As Americans, we have become accustomed to so many individual freedoms, rights and privileges that we often take many of them for granted. One such right is the right to vote. Tuesday, August 5th is a primary election. If you have never registered to vote, register now. Check out the FAQs at www.sos.mo.gov. If you don't get registered in time to vote on August 5th, you'll still have a golden opportunity to vote in the general election on Tuesday, November 4th...

Community Connection-Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner
Posted Wednesday, July 16, at 4:11 PM

O.K., I admit it -- I am a die-hard Dirty Dancing fan. The movie, that is, and I'd like to say that it's because it's about a young girl who finds her own path and stands up for the underdog. Yeah, yeah, but it doesn't hurt that in 1987 Patrick Swayze was hot. I still crank it up in time to hear him say "Nobody puts Baby in the corner." Oh, my...
