Community Connections - On the Road Again
Posted Tuesday, March 11, at 8:12 AM
Throughout most of my professional life I have had jobs which required travel and this job is no exception. This time of year I make a half-dozen or so trips to Jefferson City and, as many of you know, there is just no easy way to get to the middle of the State from the Bootheel.
Like many things, we take good roads for granted. Our friends at the Missouri Department of Transportation have worked very hard the last few years to improve the State's transportation systems and to establish a planning process to prioritize those improvements. A national study named "Grading the States 2008" recently pointed out that Missouri has made investments in its major highways so that now more than 80 percent of vehicle miles traveled on them are in good condition, as compared to 52 percent being in good condition just five years ago. A separate national study found Missouri to have the nation's third lowest administrative costs per mile and that MODOT has gone from having the nation's third worst road to an estimated ninth best.
This is a great thing for all of us. MODOT's Better Roads, Brighter Future program will improve the remainder of the State's 5,600 miles of major highways over the next five years. Amazingly, these highways carry 80 percent of all travel on the state highway system -- 103 million miles traveled per day -- and 95 percent of Missourians live within 10 miles of one of these roads.
On the home front, now that the John M. Dalton Memorial Highway (Hwy 412) has been improved to four lanes between Kennett and Interstate 55, we keep the 412 corridor on our list of priorities for the region. We want to close the gap between Kennett and the Mo./Ark. bridge so that 412 can truly be a four-lane corridor across Tennessee, Missouri and Arkansas.
Improvements to Highways 53 and 25 are also scheduled. A contract was awarded in December for resurfacing and paving shoulders on Route 53 from Qulin to Campbell; resurfacing and paving shoulders from Poplar Bluff to Qulin and from Campbell to Holcomb is scheduled for 2010. Bids will soon be taken and, if a contract is awarded, work could start this summer to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Russell Street and Independence in Kennett. Contracts are expected to be awarded to resurface Highway 25 from Route 53 at Holcomb to Highway 412 in Kennett later this fall.
It is vital to our economic health that a solid transportation system continues throughout the state and this takes money. MODOT has begun an earnest campaign to educate Missourians about the funding gap which will reach serious levels in 2010. Sales tax, fuel tax, toll roads -- lots of ideas being discussed at all levels.
So the next time we're on the road again, let's send out a thanks to the Missouri Department of Transportation for making sure that we've got a smoother, safer way to get there. What are your thoughts on keeping it that way?
Community Connections - I'm a Believer When I was in the 5th grade my dad went to work for the Missouri State Highway Patrol as a drivers' examiner. The only opening they had at the time was in Poplar Bluff, so we moved and my parents soon became good friends with the other drivers' examiners and their families. ...
Community Connection -- The Right to Remain Silent One of my favorite comedians is Ron White. The first time I listened to the Blue Collar Comedy Club CD my son was attending Linn State Technical College and I had stopped by to visit him on my way home from Jefferson City. As I waited on the parking lot I popped the CD in and within a few minutes I was laughing so hard I was almost crying. To this day I still imagine a few teachers and students at Linn wonder who the heck that crazy lady on their parking lot was...
Community Connections -- Trimming the Fat I love food, especially ice cream and candy and chicken and dumplings and cornbread. My grandparents, Diser and Beulah Allen, owned a small grocery store in Friendship and I spent lots of time there growing up. It was a friendly place where in the winter the men played checkers or dominos and in the summer it seemed everyone in the world had to have a bologna sandwich. ...
Community Connections -- Community My parents and their friends used to make an annual trek to Big Springs each fall to enjoy the nice weather and beautiful foliage. They started taking me along when I was about a year old and because my birthday is in October, it became a family tradition to celebrate my birthday at Big Springs. As my children grew up we continued this tradition...
Community Connections -- Delta Fair Parade Even if I don't have kids going back to school it's easy to know when school starts -- not by the school supply lists or the buses or the after-school traffic, but by the number of calls the Chamber receives about the Delta Fair and Parade. Our good friends Jack McDaniel and Bill Walsh celebrated their 50th year as Parade Marshals last year and decided that after training me for five years, they would let me take a run at it. ...
Community Connection -- Rumors are rampant! Retail rumors are running rampant! In the last few days much talk has circulated about the possibility of a retailer or two deciding to locate in Kennett. The good news is that several developers, or representatives of developers are indeed considering Kennett for retail expansion. ...
Community Connections -- Shop Kennett First Shop Kennett first! Many of the comments, concerns and questions that people have involve issues that relate directly to funding. Streets, sidewalks, demolition, drainage, and even mosquitoes all have our attention, but in order to provide the best services to the citizens of Kennett, the City has to have the money to do it...
Community Connections -- Company's coming! Company's coming! There are those folks out there who, like some of my relatives, keep things neat and tidy every single day of the year. Unlike me, they're never caught with dishes in the sink, or clothes on the floor or dust on the furniture. But, boy, if we know company's coming, no matter the condition of our homes, it's the rare one of us who doesn't scramble to put at least a few things away or swipe the top of the T.V. one more time...
Community Connection -- Manac in production Manac Trailers, U.S.A. will begin production at the end of June to a collective community "hooray!". We will feel the pangs of Emerson Motor's departure for a long time, but the 150 jobs that Manac will create over the next few months will help to ease that pain. ...
