Wall E -- not!

Have animated Disney movies always attempted to make a political statement? I don't think so, and I wish they would not any more!

I took my grandchildren to see Wall E on Saturday and found myself thinking, "What happened to animated movies that are simply entertaining and not an attempt to make a political statement -- especially to children?

If they're going to make a statement at all, why not make one about the value of friendship, like Toy Story. Or, why not about recognizing the value of the little things in life, like Cars.

My youngest grandchildren are too young to consciously notice the political statement in the movie. I do wonder what they might remember subconsciously, however.

Older children and adolescents, at least some of them, will notice the statement, I think.

All the people in the movie are obese, so obese in fact that they cannot even walk. For that matter, they do not even have to walk because they ride around in a "rocket chair" with everything they need at their fingertips. In essence, all the people are completely worthless, accomplishing nothing.

The only thing they accomplished is filling the earth with nothing but trash. There is no sign of life on earth -- only Wall E, a trash-compacting robot, and a roach! Of course, the roach is a "friend" to Wall E. Give me a break!

I know there is a segment of our society that might be like the people in Wall E. For the most part, however, we are not that way, the earth is OK, and the productive among us surely will not ever let that slip away from us.

Totally agree! Was very political I thought. Everyone was obese, lazy, useless beings really. In fact one part I thought was hilarious, was when one person attempted to stand after years of not moving- the same person not being able to reach his drink that was sitting in front of him, so he used a button on his mechanical floating chair to raise his body up. It seemed obvious the point they were trying to make was that everyone is getting lazy and we're making a mess out of the planet. It is true that there are alot of people that are like the people in Wall E. But there are alot that aren't.

That said, I did think it was pretty cute. Had some really sweet moments. But as an adult who can pick up on the political undertones of the movie I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I could have. It was kind of overkill. And silly.

I have not seen the movie, but wouldn't the statement you say the movie is making be more social than political?

Re: Lt. Jim Dangle

As our all knowing big brother politicians endeavor ever harder to pass laws politicizing every aspect of America's social fabric, the two have become one and the same.
