Observations -- Leading the Charge

I remember the whoopla surrounding AIDS when it first became news in the United States.
I remember how several politicians and other leaders in our society jumped on the AIDS bandwagon and were wanting to contribute millions and millions of dollars toward finding a cure for aids, or, more accurately, to raise millions and millions of dollars of taxes to fund AIDS research. Fact is cancer kills more Americans each year than does AIDS. Fact is heart disease kills more Americans each year than does AIDS. And, I read this week that, according to one public health expert, deaths tied to a drug-resistant staph infection may exceed those caused by AIDS this year. I know some "innocent" people contract AIDS. I also know the three main ways AIDS is transmitted: * by having sex with an HIV-infected person * by sharing needles or injection equipment with an injection drug user who is infected with HIV, or * from HIV-infected women to their babies before or during birth, or through breast-feeding after birth. Obviously, the most effective means of preventing the spread of AIDS is abstaining from illicit sexual behavior and abstaining from sharing illegal drug-injection materials. The cost factor for that is relatively very, very low. Three other diseases obviously are more deserving of our attention and money, it seems to me: cancer, heart disease and, now, staph infections. Who is going to lead the charge for this? Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

I WILL
Your right! My Dad is a two time open heart patiant as well as he has his second dose of cancer <- the kind you dont beat at his age. Now I hear all kinds of benefits and auctions for cancer funds. How about for the heart, Not much. Staph...Pfffff Yeah Right!
My question? Who is it that gets the money? The people thats sick? Nope!
Maybe they need new mice to test and thats what pays for its research.
I think sometimes we think about how much it costs to study it more than we do the people that are sick and cant support themselve because they draw SS after serving years in the navy supporting our great country only to have most of the check they get go towards a spin down that makes them pay for the insurence they recieve.
So I guess what Im saying is, I'd rather lead a show for someone who is sick then to let someone spend it on rats. It will take someone with a lot of cash to start something the size of what we will need for this staph infection. I hear 12 states have got it now. I would donate what I could to this, but no way could I lead it. Maybe the NFL & Players. They got cash. And from what I hear, They are at more risk of getting it!
It seems to me that the majority of people infected by AIDS have gotten the virus as a result of their own behavior. Until these people change, there isn't a whole lot of point in spending millions/billions of dollars on it. I think it should continue to be researched, but there are other things, like you mentioned that people have no control over getting, staph, cancer, heart problems, etc. In my opinion we should help these people find a cure.
