Observations -- Ready to vote?

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama keeps saying things in his quest for the presidency of the United States that appear to indicate he does not have much of a grasp on foreign affairs.
Asked whether he would move U.S. troops out of Iraq to better fight terrorism elsewhere, he said, "We've got to get the job done there and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there." That makes one wonder whether Obama is really understanding the war in Iraq. Obama also said he would send U.S. troops into Pakistan without local permission to hunt down terrorists. He also said he would sit down with the likes of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and other dictators to negotiate with them without an agenda. The Democratic candidate who appears to be his primary opponent for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton, is not saying those kinds of questionable things and appears to have a much better grasp on foreign affairs. This makes me wonder, How important is a candidate's perception of foreign affairs when seeking to become president? I am also wondering how many people in the United States are willing to vote for a female president? And, How many people in the United States are ready to vote for an African-American for president? What do you think? Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

I personally don't care what their race or gender is, as long as they can get the job done and done right! But I do think a lot of of people will have problems with it. I've heard from several people that "a woman would never be president".
I know neither one of them has my vote though. And that is based on their morals and lifestyles, choices, etc. not the color of their skin or their gender.
Just because Obama may say something that is not politically correct does not mean that he does not have a good grasp of foreign affairs. Moreover, I think your citation of Senator Obama is contextually ambiguous. Most Republican pundits have claimed that Obama was slamming our troops. I think it is important to mention that Obama is talking about Afghanistan in that statement, where Western troops have killed more civilians than the insurgents. According to an August 1, Associated Press count, militants killed 231 civilians in attacks in 2007, Western forces killed 286. Another 20 were killed in crossfire that can't be attributed to one party. So yes, it is "causing enormous pressure over there." So in regard to the conflict in Afghanistan, maybe Obama actually knows more than his Democratic and Republican challengers as well as the Republican pundits about foreign affairs. I also think that if finding Bin Laden means going into Pakistan without local permission, than so be it. The original purpose of the War in Afghanistan, unlike the superfluous War in Iraq, was to bring those who were responsible for the attacks on our country to justice; and maybe Obama realizes that, unlike Clinton and Edwards and the Republicans who voted in favor of giving authorization to go into Iraq.
As to wheter America is ready for a female or African American president, I guess we'll find that out on election day.
America is not ready for a female president or an african-american president.
America is also not ready for a democratic president either. We will have a republican president come 08.
Mark my words!
