Observations -- A new paradigm to American Life
Posted Thursday, May 8, at 3:08 PM
I'm wondering, is the cost of fuel going to be curbing anyone's traveling plans?
I was reading about one man who said high gas prices are the reason he and his wife will not be driving to a casino at Lake Charles, La., this summer -- an annual trip they were making. The same man said he and his wife were canceling their family's annual vacation to the Dominican Republic. The reason? High gas prices. I've found myself driving less. Kind of looks to me like the Internet is going to become even more a part of our lives as gas prices continue to climb. Gas prices are certainly going to continue to climb unless our government changes its policy and permits drilling in Alaska. And, who knows, maybe they would continue to rise anyway. Already, one can order movies via the Internet and have them shipped directly to his home for viewing as long as he wants and then return them for more, eliminating the drive to the local video store. Practically everything one buys for the home can be purchased via the Internet and delivered to the home, eliminating all kinds of trips. No doubt schools will be evaluating long trips to play ballgames. Looks like we're entering a new paradigm to American life even more dependent upon the Internet than ever! Yes? No?
Observations -- Frustrated with shopping I was more than a little frustrated this past weekend with trying to shop locally. I had a bit of a situation arise as I was driving out of town for a business meeting. I got a call from my son describing the destruction of part of the privacy fence around my back yard...
Observations -- Secret weapon OK, we now know of a "secret weapon" we have at our disposal to wage war against Iran, should that become necessary. What is it you ask? Barbie dolls! A top Iranian judiciary official warned early this week of the "destructive" cultural and social consequences of the sale of Barbie dolls in Iran...
Interesting inaction I have watched with interest the inaction the Kennett District No. 39 school board has taken in its last two meetings. I am fascinated by this interesting twist of inaction. In 2007, Kennett District No. 39 Superintendent Jerry Noble was named the recipient of the Allen Oakley Educator of the Year Award. Obviously, most in the community believe that Noble is doing an excellent job leading the district. His reputation is very credible and his leadership skills were rewarded...
Observations -- Obama, Wright, and the Obama Girl I am a little confused about Barack Obama's relationship with his pastor Jeremiah Wright and with the Obama Girl. First, I wonder about his relationship with Jeremiah Wright. Are we to believe that Wright has only recently begun lashing out against "white America?" Are we to believe that Obama has never heard the kind of language from his pastor before in which his pastor damns America?...
Observations - Obama and Farrakhan The Senator from Illinois attempting to claim the Democratic Presidential nomination picked up an endorsement he might rather not have. In Chicago recently Louis Farrakhan said that Barack Obama is the "hope of the entire world." During the same speech in which Farrakhan said that he also said, "A black man with a white mother became a savior to us," referring to the mother of Fard Muhammad, the founder of the Nation of Islam...
Observations -- Cleaning house? So, the United States Congress wants to clean the house of Major League Baseball? Perhaps someone should tell them to start at their own house! How much money is OUR government, i.e., OUR tax MONEY, spending on these silly "trials" or "hearings" about the use of performance enhancing drugs by Major League Baseball players?...
Observations - Voting, don't take it for granted Two young people asked me who I was going to vote for in the presidential primary Tuesday. I had to tell them I did not know -- not that it was any of their business! Here it is Monday, the day before the primary election, and I do not know who I will vote for...
Observations - coping with tinnitus Life holds many paradoxes. There are those who cannot hear who would love to be able to go to the doctor, receive a treatment, and hear. Then, there are those who, in the words of Scripps Howard New Service writer Julie McKinnon, are "Desperately seeking silence."...
Observations -- The Election: What do we really know? So does Iowa and New Hampshire, as far as the presidential election is concerned, really matter? If you can answer the next two questions, maybe -- but probably not. First, can anyone explain the Iowa caucus system so that a novice can understand it? I listened to a couple of explanations of it on television, CNN and FOX, and I understood neither of them. In fact, I really wonder whether the folks in Iowa understand it. Perhaps one of them will read this and explain it for us...
