Ticketing thickets and rental shacks...

The other night I had the extreme privilege of attending a hearing regarding derelict or dilapidated properties located inside our city. The meeting was interesting, to say the least.
Maybe "entertaining" would be a better descriptive word, but the act could have been shorter. It lasted around two-hours. The explanations I overheard, in response to the committee's questions surrounding how and why these properties were in such poor and unfit conditions and what the owners planned to do about it, made me as a taxpaying citizen want to go 'junior high' in the back row where I sat and scream OMG! Believe it or not folks, but in this meeting, I learned that the January 2009 Ice Storm not only had the capabilities to shut us down and send us scrambling to recover in the days that followed, but it also had the supernatural capability to go back in time, and wreak havoc also upon at least 10-20 properties, and vividly give the false appearance that the damages were at least five to ten years in downward spiral. I've got an idea; let's summons Mother Nature. Like Ricky told Lucy... "You got some 'splainin' to do!" *** On the subject of properties... What is the 911 on the rental property in this town? (Yes, I said 911. It seems like an emergency to me.) I own my own home. It is our starter home and we're really proud of our little white cottage. Somewhat because, well, it's the first place we've really been able to invest ourselves into, in a monetary sense and emotional way, but mostly because we no longer have to be faced with looking for a decent place to rent. When we were renters, we got lucky. Our landlords and their properties were above standard expectations. However, I know many people, good people, that have not been so lucky. I realize that it can go both ways. There are terrible renters who have no respect for property, whether it is their own belongings or someone else's things. I also get the fact that people actually skip out on the rent, and repeatedly offer excuses for this injustice. But at the same time, I would like to ask our readers if they have ever been into some of these so-called rental properties? Some owners should be ashamed to offer such slums and expect anything for them aside from a red tag. But they are. And they are netting upwards of $500 per month even. What is wrong with that picture? To me it is like a Jackson Pollack or those 'forward this to 10 people or you will die' texts, "I just don't get it." Where is the bar set? I know we're making strides to restore our neighborhoods, and I appreciate that, and even find it motivational to start looking closer to home in trying to do my part. But I also think that officials need to start holding some of these slumlord's feet to the fire more consistently. Provide options and protection also for those who are not able or ready to invest in buying a property, but would still like a nice residence and neighborhood to live. What do you think? I have never been 1 day late on rent, and I don't care if it takes all of my pay to use for rent if it is a very nice place. The MAIN thing is a (non-leaky)roof over my family's heads. I take care of any place I rent as if it were my own. Landlords, if you cannot afford to keep up your properties, please sell them to someone who can.
There could be several reasons for the conditions you describe. Many people want a nice place to live at an affordable price, however, they don't keep the lawns mowed properly, they actually trash the house. These type of people have say to themselves "Its not mine why should I take good care of it the landlord has lots of money! They won't watch their own children and teach them how to respect other peoples property, etc, etc.
So one has to ask a higher price in order to try to maintain the house, pay the real state tax, pay the insurance.
And some landowners give up because of the way the majority of renters treat the rental property.
I recently went to Paragould and Jonesboro and in comparison to Kennett, Kennett was a slum. I didn't see the junk and empty buildings in these towns like I do in Kennett. All the factories are gone except for Parker I think and the Riggs supply Warehouse is no more. But Kennett has a new runway, taxiway and Terminal building at the airport but who is using them. Everytime I go by there, I see no airplanes. Is this Sheryl Crow's private airport? There is a large empty Spec building on the north side of town that I know has been there for two years. What is it for? Officials get elected but are they doing anything besides declaring Michael Jackson Day, Girl Scout cookie day, watermelon slicing opening day, Free Rain Cloud Day etc. I thought they were going to remove all the awnings on the square but I think they are still there. If you are going to do something, well let's at least get it started. The old gas station byside the old Safeway store is still Junk and worse a few years ago when it was sold. I actually say a guy mowing the weeds that have grown up on the big piles of dirt. and now he has junk veicles parked on the property. Can't they at least tear the old junk building down or at least put up an 8 foot fence. I'm sure you have code enforcement officers in Kennett, do they ever levi fines or just put the tags on the buildings. WAKE UP KENNETT!! Do something after all isn't Kennett the county seat. You are sure setting a good example for companies and families wanting to move there. I sure wouldn't and I am from there.
Ditto to post by ktgivie. Kennett use to be a nice place especially for the county seat. Now I'm embarased to drive thru town. I have family coming to visit later this summer and I've given them directions to my house via the north by-pass. Maybe we won't have to go downtown.
