Ticketing thickets and rental shacks...
Posted Wednesday, June 17, at 11:13 AM
The other night I had the extreme privilege of attending a hearing regarding derelict or dilapidated properties located inside our city. The meeting was interesting, to say the least.
Maybe "entertaining" would be a better descriptive word, but the act could have been shorter. It lasted around two-hours. The explanations I overheard, in response to the committee's questions surrounding how and why these properties were in such poor and unfit conditions and what the owners planned to do about it, made me as a taxpaying citizen want to go 'junior high' in the back row where I sat and scream OMG! Believe it or not folks, but in this meeting, I learned that the January 2009 Ice Storm not only had the capabilities to shut us down and send us scrambling to recover in the days that followed, but it also had the supernatural capability to go back in time, and wreak havoc also upon at least 10-20 properties, and vividly give the false appearance that the damages were at least five to ten years in downward spiral. I've got an idea; let's summons Mother Nature. Like Ricky told Lucy... "You got some 'splainin' to do!"

On the subject of properties... What is the 911 on the rental property in this town? (Yes, I said 911. It seems like an emergency to me.) I own my own home. It is our starter home and we're really proud of our little white cottage. Somewhat because, well, it's the first place we've really been able to invest ourselves into, in a monetary sense and emotional way, but mostly because we no longer have to be faced with looking for a decent place to rent. When we were renters, we got lucky. Our landlords and their properties were above standard expectations. However, I know many people, good people, that have not been so lucky. I realize that it can go both ways. There are terrible renters who have no respect for property, whether it is their own belongings or someone else's things. I also get the fact that people actually skip out on the rent, and repeatedly offer excuses for this injustice. But at the same time, I would like to ask our readers if they have ever been into some of these so-called rental properties? Some owners should be ashamed to offer such slums and expect anything for them aside from a red tag. But they are. And they are netting upwards of $500 per month even. What is wrong with that picture? To me it is like a Jackson Pollack or those 'forward this to 10 people or you will die' texts, "I just don't get it." Where is the bar set? I know we're making strides to restore our neighborhoods, and I appreciate that, and even find it motivational to start looking closer to home in trying to do my part. But I also think that officials need to start holding some of these slumlord's feet to the fire more consistently. Provide options and protection also for those who are not able or ready to invest in buying a property, but would still like a nice residence and neighborhood to live. What do you think?
What's for lunch? Kids grow up so fast! Each day I realize this more and more, when my little ones, appear to be not-so-little anymore with their grown-up ideas and maturing behaviors. Yesterday, for example, we were at my son Holden's baseball game when his brother, Chandler, a four-year-old going on 18, struck up a little conversation with my husband and I while sitting on the bleachers...
Halo This morning I was informed by friends of our family that someone very dear to us passed away Thursday evening. The news was, as you can imagine, difficult to fathom, and saddened me very much. I have been praying every day for Miss Lindsey Pruett, and her family and friends, since hearing about her tragic accident on Sunday...
Who's Amy? Mothers, if you're riding along in your SUV, listening to the radio accompanied by the sounds of your young daughter and her friends piled in the back seat, singing the latest Britney Spears song "If you seek Amy" from the top of their lungs... BEWARE!...

Confidential confessions? I remember being a teenager and my high school friends telling me that it was okay to tell my doctor that I did, in fact, engage in social smoking of cigarettes if he asked when my mom was out of the room, because, "They're not aloud to tell your parents about confidential stuff like that!" (Yeah right! I thought...)...
The family that plays together... Well, we survived the storm... all six of us that is. My husband Jake and I, along with our two boys, Holden and Chandler, and our dogs, Bailey and Mason, created a scene in our master bedroom during the days we were out of power that looked like something from the set of MASH...
Bailouts Gone Wild? And now something to make you say, "Did I just read what I think I read?" "Adult entertainment moguls Larry Flynt and Joe Francis are asking for a $5 billion bailout from the government, claiming the pornography industry is on the decline...
Pops might've been a mechanic… but that doesn't mean I belong under the hood. So much talk about Caroline Kennedy's interest in the New York senate seat. People are saying her being a Kennedy alone, suffices, in terms of experience or what it would take to fill those Jimmy Choo shoes. I disagree. Don't get me wrong; I am a fan of the Kennedy family. ...
The ghost of Christmas' past... With Christmas right around the corner, I wanted to share a post I found by someone on the Web while doing what I do best during times of sheer boredom-- googling… I have very fond memories of Christmas when I was a child… We would always get a can of Christmas candy, a case of potato chips and a case of drinks, which would have to last my brother and I over the ten days of Christmas. ...
