From the pages of history: Treasures of the Malden Historical Museum August 8, 2012
I am pleased to inform everyone that Narvel Felts is letting his special exhibit remain at the Malden Historical Museum until mid October. He told me last week he is so busy he just doesn't have time to come and help me take it down. We are the lucky ones. We have had visitors from Illinois, Tennessee, Arkansas and Canada here to visit his exhibit.
During the alumni weekend the Malden Historical Museum will be hosting a Highlights of Bootheel History Seminar and a genealogy class for beginners. Call the museum to reserve your seat at (573) 276-5008.
We have the Malden Merit and Malden Press-Merit on microfilm from July 26, 1901 to December 31, 1986. Visitors are welcome to come and read some of the very interesting news of the day from over one hundred years ago.
Here are just a few tidbits I have found in our treasure of vintage newspapers.
News in 1912
"The pretty moonlight nights are especially pleasing to those who are interested in the matter of having the park at the school grounds illuminated by electricity."
"If you have any business of your own and attend to it properly: you'll have no time to look after other peoples' affairs."
"Uncle Bill Varvel while in town a few days ago said he was most assuredly going to attend the Confederate Veteran's reunion at Kennett, Friday, August 23."
"Frank Reeves came up from McGuire Tuesday to pay his subscription to the Merit. Frank said he done well with the melon crop, that he got two car loads from fourteen acres and head to come to Malden to spend the money. He is an all right good fellow who knows how to view the bright side of life."
"New Watering Place: Several of the business houses of Malden have clubbed together and filled a long felt wanted of this place by building a real large and fine public watering trough on rear of the Bank of Malden lot and just across the alley from the Fidelity Lumber & Supply Co., big new lumber shed, where they have what you need and when you need it at the right price. Phone 230"
Malden Historical Museum would like for you to bring your own family histories to the museum for our archive room and any genealogy or history books covering our Bootheel area.
