July 4, 2012

There will be a special joint meeting of the Malden Board of Public Works and the Malden City Council tomorrow night. The meeting will be held in a so called "closed session" and will not be open to the public. The minutes of the meeting will consist of any motions made and the recorded vote on those motions.

The reason for the meeting, and its closed nature, is that the Malden BPW is attempting to make a deal that hopefully will result in lower electrical rates for our community. The sale of assets owned by the City of Malden is contemplated, and the approval of the Malden City Council is required.

The BPW has been asked to submit a bid by this Friday July 6th. The issues involved are not subject to a simple solution and the "right" solution is not obvious. Whether or not the correct answer is found may not be known for a number of years. There are a number of entities involved. I have been told by knowledgeable people that the entire electrical generation and distribution industry is trying to determine its future. Apparently, the rules of the game have changed drastically and old associations and assumptions no longer work. As soon as our city attorney feels the nature of our contemplated deal can be disclosed then that will happen.

This Wednesday, the United States of America will be two hundred and thirty-six years old. You may believe that the USA has been around a long time. Not really; we are still a young country in the span of history. I have personally been around for twenty-eight per cent of the existence of the United States. I never met Thomas Jefferson, but I have known one of his descendants. Last year in this space I reprinted the entire Declaration of Independence. This year I will take it easy on Ms. Luke. I strongly suggest that you take the time to read our founding document on our common birthday. It's a remarkable piece of writing especially the part after, "We hold these truths to be self evident." Happy Birthday United States of America! I wish everyone a great holiday.

The financial report is as follows:

June 22, 2012Balance $1,406,247.52
Revenues $73,001.63
Expenses $194,802.74
June 29, 2012Balance $1,284,446.31
