Bob Dylan wrote a song in the 1960's called "Subterranean Homesick Blues." A line in the song says, "The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handle." Well, right now the toilets in the Frisco Park don't work because the vandals broke all the fixtures. There is really nothing new about the vandalism. Every restroom in every city park in Malden has been repeatedly vandalized. Also, the repair crew recently replaced the benches on a number of picnic tables in the park. Three days after the repair was made someone lined up a number of the tables and then jumped off the table top on to the benches until they shattered. The vandalism problem seems to have some connection with the basketball court in the parks. Area residents have complained about the situation. However, it is a sad reality that ninety-nine people can show up to play ball and have a good time and one idiot can ruin everything.

The original Vandals were one of the tribes that came out of Eastern Europe in the 4th and 5th Centuries. They were noted for overrunning most of Western Europe and North Africa and generally looting and destroying wherever they went. Today anyone who willfully or ignorantly destroys property is called a vandal. Calling someone a "Vandal" today is probably not fair to the original ones.

The original Vandals finally got their comeuppance when they ran into another tribe coming out of Eastern Europe called the Huns. We all know Attila. Maybe in Malden the police will have to play Attila to the idiot vandals for a few weeks. Pity the fool who gets caught.

A regularly scheduled city council meeting will be held on the 16th of May. There are resolutions and ordinances to approve or disapprove. Two of the ordinances deal with the new Super D Drugstore to be built in Malden. I believe they will be approved.

The third ordinance on the agenda will reduce the residential electrical rates by one cent per kilowatt for June, July, August, and September of 2011. I KNOW THAT ONE WILL PASS!

Everything else on the agenda looks like the usual business your city government deals with. The thing to remember is that what ever we do as your city government can have a direct effect on you personally. The city government can determine the cost of electricity for an obvious example. Watch us on our local access television channel or join us at city hall. We will, as always, spend your money or change the rules we live by. We will do it wisely or foolishly depending on your point of view.

The financial report is as follows:

May 6, 2011
Balance $1,337,018.46
Revenues $134,466.01
Expenses $92,957.51
May 13, 2011
Balance $1,378,526.96
