Happy Birthday to my Wife

Posted Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at 11:30 AM

With December 8 being my wife's birthday, she told me that all she wanted to do was go out to eat and go watch the second installment of the Twilight Saga: New Moon. (I was so thrilled).

Since the series is overwhelmingly popular, I took it upon myself to pre-order tickets for the 7:25 p.m., showing on December 8, at the Paragould Cinema 8.

So Tuesday afternoon, just as we were about to get ready to head to Paragould, my son began to feel a little warm to the touch. We took his temp and it was 102ºF.

To attempt to break the fever, I took him and gave him him a cool bath. It broke, however by this point, he wasn't feeling like himself. We decided to shelve the birthday plans, and I called the theater to see about switching the tickets. They obliged.

That evening, as we prepared for bed, I asked my wife to hand me the thermometer, as my son was feeling warm again. This time, his temp was 103.3ºF. We then decided it was time for a trip to the ER. (TRRMC here we come!)

At the hospital, the ER doc decided to admit him and see what his pediatrician thought the next day.

Wednesday morning, (after the wife and I got no sleep) Dr. Beach came in and informed us that our son had pneumonia. The hospital stay lasted until Friday afternoon. (Thanks to my mother, Jill R., and Holly M. for the "Get Well" gifts.)

So Friday, my son was back to normal, being the 2-year-old that he is. Saturday, we decided to make our Tuesday trip.

We get to Paragould and go to Chili's (fancy, huh?) for dinner. We order and after waiting what seems like forever, we got our food. During the course of dinner, my son decided to become a terror, quit listening to us, and at one point, began crying at the top of his lungs because I took a crayon out of his hand that he was about to color on the wall with. (Gotta love the terrible 2s.)

We finish our meal and, thanks to Chili's quick service (sarcasm), we arrived at the theater about 10-15 minutes late.

I go to the counter and tell them about the ticket situation from earlier in the week and they take care of us. We then go into the PACKED theater. (You'd think that with the movie being out for a while now, it wouldn't be so packed).

As we get seated on the top row, my son begins asking where the new moon is. We finally get him to start whispering, but I think the lady next to us was getting annoyed. (She can get over it. I didn't enjoy her having her arm a quarter of the way in my seat either).

About 20 minutes into the movie, my son becomes bored (thank you) and we go down to the arcade so his mom can watch her movie.

In the arcade, we play the race car game, the ATV game, and a couple of games of pinball. The deer hunting game, which my son would have really enjoyed, took our last dollar so we had no more cash and began pretending to play the games.

I then decided to get my son some candy (debit card) and we pretended to play some more games.

My son later asked where mommy was, so we ventured back into the theater.

When we got back to our seat, being hyped up on gummy worms, my son had a hard time being quiet...until we gave him some smarties.

About 20 minutes later (if that) the movie ended and we headed for home. By the time we got back to Kennett, he was out like a light...a phenomenon since he had so much sugar.
