Adventures in Potty Training

For the past few weeks, my wife and I have been working hard to potty train our 2-year-old son. We tried twice before, but it didn't seem as if he was ready yet.
We decided that since he was supposed to start daycare in August, we better hit it hard and heavy and get him trained. We opted, bravely, to dismiss the Pull-up training and go straight to underwear, or "undies" as my son calls them, still leaving the diaper on him at night to forgo any chance of sleeping in Lake Jacob. The first week in undies saw several "mishaps," mainly in the dining area of our house (thank goodness for wood flooring). You would have thought my son sprung a leak (pun intended). Each time he flooded our floor, we lectured him and gave him a timeout, hoping that the idea of going "pee-pee" in the potty would catch on. (My wife even sang a little song to help encourage him). The second week saw fewer dam breaks, however there was still the occasional "mud slide." (Luckily, my wife got to take care of most of those.) There was one incident during the second week of potty training that I will not soon forget. * Walmart -- After picking my son up from the sitter, my wife, son, and I go to Walmart to do a little shopping. After picking up a few items and venturing to the cooler section, my son (who has been insisting on sitting in the large part of the basket instead of the seat) stood up as his mom and I were talking. Before he could say anything to us, the floodgates broke, spilling out onto a large Walmart Deli Pizza that we had tucked under the basket. Both slightly embarrassed and mildly amused, I quickly got my visibly upset son out of the basket and we walked to the car, changed his clothes, and waited for his mom to finish shopping. Surprisingly, that was his only public accident. As time went on, things began to look brighter as my son started to enjoy going potty. He also really liked wearing his undies. As he began to wake up at night to go potty, we got brave enough to leave the undies on at night (at least we have for the past two nights). This past weekend, with both my wife and myself home to work hard on the training, I can proudly say he didn't have one accident. The new daycare he started on Monday, July 20, also reported no accidents on Monday. Let's hope it continues. |
